I am so excited to be starting work again at the Stroke rehabilitation ward at PRI next week. This project is run through Tayside Health Arts Trust and NHS Tayside and enables patients who have just suffered a stroke to access high quality arts tuition both one to one and in small groups.
It is a real privilege to work with people who have experienced such a life changing event and to bring creative practice to the ward. Fused glass as a material is beautifully tactile, comes in a wealth of colors and it is possible to create simple and effective pieces very quickly.
For many, coming onto the ward, having lost motor or cognitive skills, the opportunity to work creatively and learn new skills is a lifeline and a welcome step back towards independence. Over the 18 week program I will be working with a number of patients in a variety of medium including ceramics, painting, glass, collage and mixed media to create a ‘gallery wall’ for families and visitors to the ward and culminating in a display celebration for families, nursing staff and local press.
